Thanks for the write-up. I appreciate how clearly you laid out the information.

This is something I'm exploring to avoid subjecting myself to the same exercises we perform on criminals when booking them into jail.

2nd amendment language seems so simple. It's amazing how many of our liberties have been legislated away.

As an estate planning attorney in Pennsylvania, I couIdn't agree more, and I believe this is especially important for young families. Young parents often do not realize the importance of an estate plan because they believe they do not have any valuable assets that will be taxed. I stress the non-financial benefits of estate planning to these parents, such as guardianship.

Tom,

Thank you for the thoughts. There are several attorneys throughout the country that offer a similar model for their business law clients. I worked with many of them in developing my own. I just happen to be one of very, very few in West Michigan that offer it. It truly is a win-win as you point out. Thank you for your comment!

This is a wonderful idea and very personal. local concept for small business needs. OK, so what an indvidual that feels the same way, don't charge me by the hour, give me a monthly flat rate for a level of legal service I choose. Yes they offer this as a so called benefit you can buy at my workplace, but it does not have that local flavor, actual caring individuals (did I just say that about attorneys, no). Mike, franchise this concept and sell it to local attorneys as a local service. Why it will work, I pay for car towing service I might need in advance, I pay for HVAC monthly service I might need in advance. In service plans at reasonable rates. Just an idea from a friend...

Michael- As a younger estate planning attorney , it is very refreshing to read your blog and your advice about being a "counselor" to your estate planning clients and not just a transactional attorney running the numbers to reduce taxes. Estate planning seems like one of the few practice areas where we can make a huge difference by taking the time to really engage our clients in a conversation about what they really want and need and how to accomplish that together. Thanks for the posts.

Mike, you are so right on the child protection/child safety. I understand as a mother of four young children, that child protection and child safety is important, however, so is providing for them god heaven forbid something happen to us parents so they don't have to become part of "The System." As wonderful, LOL as it is. This should be passed on for more than just November. Have a wonderful day.

I agree with your points concern Trusts. When working with Business owners they have become almost required parts of their estate plan. Too much at risk, too much exposure, too much to lose. I have worked with a number of his readers who also fight kicking and screaming agaist the concept of creating tax free savings for retirement. Roth IRA conversions and yes, cash value life insurance in this enviroment of rising taxes can create an available pool of funds that can be accessed to reduce taxes while improving purchasing power during retirement. Please continue to inform people how important it is that they review their situation and make decisions for their business, family and friends. Often it is important to know the trees not just the forest.
