{"id":1984,"date":"2011-04-17T13:26:44","date_gmt":"2011-04-17T20:26:44","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.lichtermanlaw.com\/?p=1984"},"modified":"2011-04-17T13:26:44","modified_gmt":"2011-04-17T20:26:44","slug":"big-will-misconception","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.lichtermanlaw.com\/index.php\/big-will-misconception\/","title":{"rendered":"The Biggest Misconception About Wills"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">As a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lichtermanlaw.com\/index.php\/firm-overview\/our-team\/\" target=\"_blank\">Grand Rapids Estate Planning attorney<\/a>, I regularly hear misconceptions about estate planning.\u00a0 A recent conversation reminded me of what I believe is THE biggest misconception about Wills.\u00a0 During the conversation, a friend said &#8220;so I have my will or trust, so I don&#8217;t have to worry about going through probate&#8230;&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The Myth: having a  Will means you don&#8217;t go through probate.\u00a0 And the buzzer says &#8220;bzzzzzt,&#8221;  wrong.\u00a0 Just having a Will virtually guarantees that you go through probate.\u00a0 A  Will serves as a &#8220;roadmap&#8221; for the probate process &#8211; it allows you to  say who you want to do certain things and how you would prefer they be  done (and if you have minor children it is <em>one<\/em> of the ways to  name guardians, but definitely NOT the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lichtermanlaw.com\/index.php\/estate-planning\/childrens-protection-planning\/\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;best&#8221;
